The Legacy Fire Training Academy is a 6-month hybrid firefighter certification program designed specifically for the volunteer firefighter. It combines the flexibility of online coursework with the essential in-person training needed to build competence and confidence in the field. Cadets follow a recommended schedule to complete online lessons, which provide the foundational knowledge necessary for each stage of their development. In addition to the online work, cadets attend hands-on skills training sessions held one weekend per month, where they put theory into practice under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Upon successful completion of the academy and passing the required SFFMA exams, cadets will earn certifications in SFFMA Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazmat Awareness and Operations. These certifications demonstrate that the firefighter has met the standards set by the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas. Additionally, cadets who complete the program and obtain their SFFMA certifications will be eligible to challenge the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification exam, which may lead to broader career opportunities in the fire service.
Sponsorship by a fire department is required to enroll in the Legacy Fire Training Academy.
Please note: You must be sponsored by a department to participate in the Academy—no independent or unaffiliated enrollments will be accepted at this time.
Cadets are required to complete online coursework as part of this Academy. These assignments must be finished prior to each corresponding skills weekend, as they provide essential background for the hands-on training.
Coursework is self-paced and must be completed on the cadet’s own time. While instructors will monitor progress, it is ultimately the cadet’s responsibility to stay on schedule.
Failure to complete coursework on time may result in being held out of skills sessions or dismissal from the Academy. Stay on track, and reach out if you need support.
Class Time: 0800–1800 (unless otherwise noted)
All skills sessions are mandatory.
The cost to attend the Legacy Fire Training Academy is $1,500 per cadet. This fee includes tuition, two academy shirts, one cap, and all required textbooks.
Payment is due 15 days prior to the start of the Academy. If your department is unable to pay in full by the deadline due to extenuating circumstances, please contact us to discuss alternative arrangements.
Upon successful completion of the Legacy Fire Training Academy and receiving for SFFMA certification, your department may be eligible for full reimbursement of tuition through SFFMA and/or HB2604, provided the appropriate paperwork is submitted.
