SUMMER OVERNIGHT EMS COVERAGE EXPECTATIONS

The success of overnight EMS coverage depends on department-wide participation and shared responsibility. Consistent involvement ensures timely service to our community while preventing burnout among a small number of members. All EMS-certified RVFD members are expected to assist with overnight EMS coverage operations.

  • Members shall sign up for overnight coverage directly in First Due by following these steps:
  • Open First Due
  • Select “Scheduling”
  • Select “Shift Board”
  • Locate “Overnight Staffing”
  • Select an available vacancy and add your name
  • Members are responsible for ensuring they are signed up appropriately and monitoring their scheduled assignments in First Due.
  • Minimum Participation: All EMS-certified members are required to sign up for a minimum of two (2) overnight coverage shifts per month. These minimums are intended to help distribute workload fairly across the department and maintain reliable overnight EMS response capability.
  • On Duty Supervisor (ODS) Coverage: Members qualified to serve as an On Duty Supervisor are encouraged to help distribute ODS coverage responsibilities. Qualified members should identify days they are available, contact the scheduled ODS, and offer to cover shifts when possible to help reduce burnout and maintain operational consistency.
  • Take-Home Vehicles: Members requesting an overnight take-home vehicle shall contact the Chief On Call listed in the First Due Shift Board for approval. All overnight take-home vehicle use must comply with the Overnight Take-Home Vehicle SOG.
